Organisation of Conferences

The first conference took place at Jordanhill College of Education (as it then was) in November 1968. The theme was ``Mathematics in the Initial Stages of the Secondary School'', a topic which is still a source of lively debate 30 years on. Further conferences took place fairly regularly. Some were repeated at two different venues, such as Dundee and Glasgow. Initially the conferences were fairly small-scale. There was a significant change in 1987 with the conference taking place for the first time at the University of Stirling. Since then the conference has been held every year in Stirling at the end of April or the beginning of May. Numbers attending have grown dramatically. The most recent conference attracted over 450 delegates who heard around 20 different presentations.

The SMC conference is now a major event in the school year. It also serves as a social gathering at which teachers can meet colleagues from other parts of the country and compare notes.
