Dr Tony Gardiner 1947 – 2024

Published on: 29 January 2024

It is with great sadness that the Scottish Mathematical Council has learned of the passing of Dr Tony Gardiner.

Dr Gardiner, a Reader in Mathematics and Mathematics Education at the University of Birmingham, may be best known in Scotland as the original driving force behind the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, the Intermediate and Junior Mathematical Challenges, and for organising numerous mathematics masterclasses, summer schools, and educational conferences.

It can be said that mathematics education (and enjoyment!) is furthered by the likes of Dr Gardiner, who work tirelessly to promote the subject at all levels. The mathematics community will feel a sense of loss at his passing, and we pass on our deepest condolences to his family.
